[Guide] Enable Native Power Management on Laptops

On Laptops, it's quite important to have a working power management. Using a NullCPUPowerManagement is not a reliable option for laptops.

If you're using Clover Bootloader, you don't need to use NullCPUManagement as it's needed.

Before you begin, make sure you're using RehabMan's config.plist and following the laptop installation guide: https://www.elitemacx86.com/threads/guide-how-to-boot-macos-installer-on-laptops-using-clover-uefi-legacy.177/

For enabling native power management, you have two choice.
  • Clover Settings
  • A PowerManagement SSDT (Custom SSDT.aml)
Clover Settings
This method is one of the easiest method to enable macOS native power management without any need of a SSDT.
If you're using the above linked guide, this method is already enabled in all the config.plists from RehabMan.

If you're using a custom config.plist, you can configure the following settings listed below.

Make sure that you've set the correct UEFI/BIOS settings for your system and a correct SMBIOS.

Mount your EFI partition
Navigate to : EFI/Clover/config.plist
Open your config.plist file
Go to ACPI/SSDT/Generate and set PluginType=YES

Custom SSDT.aml
If you're using the above method, you don't need to use this method.
If you're having a SandyBridge or a IvyBridge CPU, you'll need to use this method.

Before you generate a SSDT for your CPU, make sure that the correct SMBIOS has been configured for your current CPU. You can generate a SMBIOS using Clover Configurator. 1. Open Terminal and download the Piker Alpha's script.

2. This will download the ssdtPRGen.sh script to your user directory. The next step is to change the file permission

3. For default SSDT generation, type:

sudo ~/ssdtPRGen.sh
4. Confirm y or n and it will generate the SSDT.
5. Open Finder and in menubar and click on Go to Folder
6. Type ~/Library/ssdtPRGen/
7. Now mount your EFI partition of your system drive. For more information, follow the guide here.
8. Copy ssdt.aml to /Volumes/EFI/EFI/Clover/ACPI/patched/

Notes:
  • The Power Management SSDT should always be named as SSDT.aml. If you're already having a SSDT.aml in the directory, rename it to SSDT-1.aml, SSDT-2.aml and so on.
  • The default generated SSDT is ssdt.aml. You can rename it to SSDT.aml without any issue.
  • If you're having a CPU which is not supported by the script, you'll need to provide custom data for the SSDT.aml generation.
  • For Haswell and later CPUs, this method is not needed. The same can be achieved via Clover settings only.
9. Restart your system

Testing Power Management
After restarting, you can test the power management. To test the power management, you need to use AppleIntelInfo.kext. You can either compile AppleIntelInfo.kext using XCode or can download from the post in the attachment.

1. Download and extract AppleIntelInfo.kext to your Desktop. Download the AppleIntelInfo.kext from here: https://www.elitemacx86.com/attachments/appleintelinfo-kext-zip.102/
2. Open Terminal
3. Type:

sudo kextutil /Users/your user name/Desktop/AppleIntelInfo.kext
When promoted, enter your password.
4. Type:

When promoted, enter your password.
5. The power states will be shown in the Terminal.

Other ways to determine a working power management

IORegistryExplorer

1.Open IORegistryExplorer and verify that X86PlatformPlugin loads under the CPU0 node.

2.For newer systems, search for "x86" in IOReg.

Intel Power Gadget Tool
  1. Install Intel Power Gadget.
  2. Let the system idle for a minute.
  3. After a minute or two, start doing tasks on your system. You can use a benchmarking software for the CPU to load.
Note:
  • Notice the graph in gadget tool. If you've a working graph, you've done it. When idle, the graph should be at 0, when at load, it should be higher.
Additional
On Laptop, you'll need to use some additional steps for a complete power management.
On Hackintoshes, the hiberation is not supported. So it's recommended to disable it.

Also, it's a good idea to disable the other hibernation related functions.

Note:
  • When updating your hack, make sure that the hibernation is disabled as the system updates re-enables it.

Your IOReg proves that your PM is working. The guide states how to check if your PM is working. But you should use a new SMBIOS for MacBookPro14,1

Looks like you did not used the system. As mentioned, after loading the kext, you must run a bunch of task so that the CPU goes to it's full speed.
