On a Laptop, you might have faced issue that the trackpad doesn't works. It's very common that the Trackpad do not work. Even if it works, the gestures does not work. The gestures would be only available if the macOS detects the trackpad as a multi gestures support. This is generally caused by no appropriate kext present for the trackpad or wrongly configured kext or the device.

So here's a quick guide to fix the trackpad including the gestures. The fix works for all PS/2 interface trackpads.

The method is supported on the following.

Trackpad Interface:
  • PS/2 only
macOS/OS X versions:
  • Supports OS X version 10.8.x or later
Supported Vendors:
  • Synaptics
  • ELAN
  • ALPS
  • FocalTech
Get Device Information
The very first step is to get the device information. The device information is basically a manufacturer name and model no.
You can use Device Manager in Windows to get the information

Download Trackpad kexts
The next step is to download the required kext to enable the hardware.

Downloads
  1. VoodooPS2Controller
  2. SmartTouchPad
Note :
  • Download the latest version for better support.
Mounting the EFI Partition and placing kext
  1. Mount your EFI partition of your system
  2. Copy VoodooPS2Controller.kext from Release folder downloaded above.
  3. Navigate to EFI/Clover/kexts/Other and place the the kext to this location.
Notes :
  • If the kext is already present in the directory, replace them with a new version
Restart your Laptop
After making all the necessary changes, restart your laptop.

Checking the Trackpad and gestures
The trackpad should be working now. To check the gestures:

1. Go to System Preferences
2. Go to Trackpad
3. If the preference pane is available, the gestures should work.
4. You can configure the rest option such as tracking speed, button functioning from here.

Notes :
  • Do not use both the kext at the same time. First try the VoodooPS2Controller. If it doesn't works, use SmartTouchPad.
  • For ASUS, Acer, Lenovo, HP(not all), i recommend to use SmartTouchPad.
  • For Dell, and other old and new HP Laptops, i recommend to use VoodooPS2Controller.
  • For ALPS trackpad, you can use Dr. Hurt's refined ALPS Trackpad driver.
  • For macOS 10.14.x, install the SmartTouchPad kext in S/L/E. Placing it to EFI partition will not work.
