Audio Compatibility for macOS

Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST)

Intel® Smart Sound Technology (Intel® SST) is an integrated audio DSP (Digital Signal Processor) built to handle audio, voice, and speech interactions. However, Laptops with Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) aren't supported on macOS. Any device connected through (usually a built-in mic) will not work under macOS.

Headphone/Combo Jack

Few Laptops with a Combo Headphone Jack may not get any audio input through them and you will have to either use the built-in microphone or an external audio input device via USB.

Supported Codecs

Not all Audio Codecs are supported by AppleALC on macOS. Refer to the Audio Codec Support linked below for more information

LIMITATIONS
  • Laptops with Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) aren't supported on macOS. Any device connected through (usually a built-in mic) will not work under macOS.
  • Audio Codecs which is not supported by AppleALC will require Custom patching. If that's not possible, VoodooHDA can be used as a workaround, however, there might be a Kernel Panic and it may not support all the codecs which are also not supported by AppleALC.
  • There can be an issue with Microphone. A workaround is to try all the layout IDs for the particular Codec. If the supported Layout ID fails to work to drive a Microphone, Custom patching is required.
  • Few Laptops with a Combo Headphone Jack may not get any audio input through them and you will have to either use the built-in microphone or an external audio input device via USB.
  • Few Audio Codecs may have Audio distortion when using Headphone/Combo Jack. A workaround is to use the CodecCommander or the Jack Fix script.
